COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland women's tennis team travels to Williamsburg, Va., to participate in the three-day William & Mary Invitational from Sept. 21-23. The squad will face players from Wake Forest, Princeton, Temple and William & Mary during the course of the weekend.
* The team brings to a court a cluster of seasoned veterans, including All-ACC honoree, junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) as well as seniors Pamela Floro (Manila, Philipines) and Monica Villarreal (Big Spring, Texas). Sophomore Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) will play a key role for the Terps, having gained international experience this summer, by playing abroad in French tournaments. Team elected captain, sophomore Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) hopes to continue her dominance while taking on the new leadership role.
* New faces include junior transfer Marta Jedrzejak, a native of Sieradz, Poland, who played two years at Central Florida Community College. A graduate of Sherwood High School, local Kristin Roth (Ashton, Md.) joins the team in her second year at Maryland along with freshman Emily DeCamilla, a recruit from C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento, California.
Martin Novak Hopes To Bring Big Ten Success To ACC
* Martin Novak, the 2000 Big Ten Coach of the Year, comes to Maryland intending to elevate the women's program to national prominence. Taking over for former coach Jim Laitta, who now concentrates his efforts on the men's team, Novak is entering his 17th year as head coach.
* Novak has compiled a win-loss record of 197-163 over his 16-year coaching career, which consisted of five seasons at the University of Arkansas and 11 at the University of Minnesota.
* Under Novak, Minnesota reached as high as No. 28 in the nation, the highest ranking in the school's history. The Gophers were the only Big Ten team to boast a winning record from 1996-2000.
* A native of Czechoslovakia, Novak played collegiate tennis at Central Florida Community College as well as at Texas Christian University.
