
Women's Tennis Takes First Swing At William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va. --- The University of Maryland women's tennis team opened up the fall season with a strong performance in the first round of the William & Mary Invitational. Competing against players from Marshall, Virginia Tech, Pennsylvania, Temple, Boston College and Richmond on the first day, several Terps emerged victorious and dry from the rainy day.
Junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated Marshall's Jessica Johnson in a tough fought out third set tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2). Team captain, Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) also handed Wake Forest's Aimee Smith, a 6-1, 6-2 loss. Junior transfer, Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) dropped to Lara Ercegovic of Temple, 6-2, 3-6, 2-6 after capturing the second set. Similarly, sophomore Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) also lost a three setter 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 to Marshall's Alice Sukner.
On the doubles end, the tandem of Causevic and Marker defeated the team of Molden and Waseem from Boston College, 8-4 and later, handed Pennsylvania's Ciulei and Pirsu an 8-6 loss in the afternoon contest. The duo moves on to play Wake Forest' s Bergman and Bielik. The Terps are back in action on Saturday, September 22 for the second round of play.
