COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland raised its record to 4-0 with its 32-20 win over West Virginia on Saturday. The Terrapins are 4-0 for the first time since 1995. Following are postgame notes from the win:

* With today's win, Maryland moves to 4-0 for the first time since 1995 and just the second time since 1978. It is just the third time in the last 16 years that the Terps have beaten North Carolina and West Virginia in the same season.

* With the win, Terrapin coach Ralph Friedgen joins legendary Maryland coach H.C. "Curley" Byrd as the only coaches to open their first seasons as Maryland's head coach with four consecutive wins. Byrd accomplished the feat in 1912.

* In a series which began in 1919 and has been played in every season since 1980, Maryland narrowed the Mountaineers' lead in games to 19-18-2.

* The turnover story was simple, and significant: Maryland forced six WVU turnovers and gave up none. The Terrapins intercepted four Brad Lewis passes, and recovered two fumbles. Two of the interceptions were deep into Maryland territory to thwart would-be Mountaineer scoring attempts.

* Since taking the opening lead on a Marc Riley touchdown with 3:55 left in the first quarter, Maryland never looked back against the Mountaineers. Maryland never trailed against West Virginia, and has trailed just once this season -- 7-0 in the season opener vs. North Carolina. For the season, Maryland has trailed for an elapsed period of just 7:21. The Terrapins have led for a total of 203:09 out of 240 minutes in four games this season.

* Tony Jackson's first quarter interception in the end zone was his third of the season. That total matches his total in his three previous seasons with the Terps.

* With 153 yards on 31 carries against West Virginia, Bruce Perry has now rushed for at least 100 yards in each of his first four starts. He becomes just the second Terrapin to open the season with four straight 100-yard rushing performances. Steve Atkins began the 1978 season with seven straight efforts of 100 yards or better.

* Perry's four games to open the 2001 season: 21-for-116 vs. North Carolina, 16-for-133, 3 TDs vs. Eastern Michigan, 30-for-276, 2 TDs at Wake Forest, 31-for-153, 1 TD vs. West Virginia. Perry entered the West Virginia game as the nation's leading rusher with a 175.0-yard per game average.

* Perry's four consecutive games over 100 rushing yards matches the second-longest string in Maryland history. Atkins had seven straight in 1978. Perry's four games matches a streak of four games by Charlie Wysocki to conclude the 1980 season. [Wysocki actually had a fifth, in the 1980 Tangerine Bowl, which does not count in the Maryland record book.]

* Perry's four straight games over 100 yards are the most ever by a Maryland sophomore. LaMont Jordan (1998), Charlie Wysocki (1979), George Scott (1977) and Steve Atkins (1976) had each run for 100 yards three straight times as sophomores, but none for four.

* Today's game marks the first this season that Bruce Perry had not hit the 100-yard plateau by halftime. At the half, the sophomore had 64 yards on 10 carries.

* LB Mike Whaley's 52-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the second quarter was the first fumble returned for a score since fellow LB Leon Joe ran one back 55 yards against the Mountaineers a year ago. The fumble by QB Brad Lewis was actually caused by Joe. The touchdown was the first of Whaley's career.

* Safety Rod Littles' third quarter interception was his first of the season and third of his career. The interception came on fourth down and ended a Mountaineer drive at the Maryland 24.

* The 100-yard kickoff return today by West Virginia's Shawn Terry was the first kickoff returned for a touchdown by a Terrapin opponent since Dez White of Georgia Tech returned one 100 yards on October 31, 1998.

* Guilian Gary again led the Terps in receiving (he has led or tied for the team lead in each game this year) today, grabbing six passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. In doing so, Gary has now caught at least one pass in each of the past 15 games.

* Senior QB Shaun Hill finished the day 13-for-32 passing, with 192 yards and a 29-yard touchdown strike to Gary.

* Maryland's attendance today was 40,166. It marks the first time since 1995 (the last time the Terps opened 4-0) that Maryland had three straight games with an attendance of 40,000 or more. The last time Maryland opened the season with three straight home games with an attendance of 40,000+ was 1986.
