COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland women's tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend at the Maryland Invitational in College Park. Playing host to teams from American, Penn State, Syracuse and West Virginia, the Terps finished with a total of 17 singles wins and seven doubles wins, including consolation play.
Junior Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) defeated teammate Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) 6-4, 6-2, in an all-Terps final to claim the Flight A singles title. American's Kristina Georgieva handed Maryland's Chloe Chavardes (St. Nombreteche, France) a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 loss in the B flight. In Flight C singles, Penn State's Maaria Husain overcame West Virginia's Emma Jeremiejczyk, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 to win the finals.
Along with partner Marker, Causevic took the doubles Flight A title as well, defeating American's Lourdes Riusech and Olga Mikhailova, 8-3. Syracuse's Kristine Holte and Jessica Schlosser won the Flight B doubles, on a default from the Maryland team of Chavardes and Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.) DeCamilla was suffering from a strain in her lower back.
"I have seen lots of improvement in the team," head coach Martin Novak said. "We are confident and are playing tough."
Next on the agenda for Maryland is the ITA Regional Tournament, to be held from Oct. 26-29.
