Princess Anne, Md. -
While part of the women's cross country team competed in Indiana this weekend, the Terp reserves traveled to Princess Anne, Md., to run in the Maryland State Championships. The meet, hosted by University of Maryland Eastern Shore, featured eight team entries and 73 runners.
The Terps placed third with 62 points, bested by only Loyola and Towson, who finished first and second, respectively. Leading the Terps was sophomore Bridget Baker (Elkridge, Md.), who finished in third place overall, with a 19:36.00 in the 5,000 meter race. Her fast finish set her a new career-low, and also broke the UMES Cross Country Course record, which was 19:42. The top four finishers in this weekend's race posted times below the course record.
Also finishing well for Maryland were freshmen Shari Gorga (Flemington, N.J.) and Ashley Tremblay (Schenectady, N.J.), who placed seventh and 14th, respectively. Sophomore Lora Stutzman (Petersburg, N.J.) placed 19th and freshman Erika Hogan (Glenwood, Md.) finished in 23rd to complete the team score.
Although the men's cross country team did not have a team entry in this weekend's meet, two Terps faced a field of 81 runners. Freshman Dan Ryan (Silver Spring, Md.) placed 13th in the 8,000 meter race, with a 28:30.00 and sophomore Pat McHenry (Harleysville, Md.) finished in 26th, one minute behind Ryan.
Next up, the Terp teams will reunite on Oct. 19 when they host the Maryland Invitational, their sole home meet of the season.
