Postgame Quotes: Maryland vs. Harlem Globetrotters

Nov. 12, 2002

Recap| Box Score

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams:
On the character his team showed in the game:
"I thought we showed some character in the second half. I really liked the seniors, including Calvin McCall. When we tied it up at 66, we just hung in there really tough. It was really great to see how they wanted to win that game. Coming off last year, you never know about that, and I think we showed very good character against a very good team tonight. They were a team that knew how to play."

On the play of the newcomers:
"It was great for the young players to see the how bad the veteran players wanted to win, and how they were willing to win the game tonight. Hopefully we learned a lot. I think Drew and Steve obviously put the ball in the basket, but they also did a good job running the offense for us. John Gilchrist also had some good minutes in the second half with the ball against some very tough defensive pressure. Travis Garrison had a really big play along the sideline in front of their bench when he dove for the loose ball when the score was very tight. I'm encouraged. We have another exhibition game; the young guys will get to play a little more."

Harlem Globetrotter Head Coach Milton Barnes:
"Obviously when you play back to back games that becomes part of the equation. We're not going to make any excuses."

"We gave the defending national champions a hell of a game."

"They [the Terps] played great. I think they have some nice inside players who have been around and understand what to do. They have a great point guard and a great chance to continue to win."

On his team and its NBA experience:
"I think the key word is 'ex.' We are older and certainly the experience helps, but sometimes we're just hoping the experience rubs off on the younger guys."
