2002 ACC TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS
No. 16/No. 5 seed MARYLAND (12-6-1, 3-3-1 ACC) vs.
No. 2/No. 1 seed NORTH CAROLINA (15-1-4, 4-1-2 ACC)
Friday, November 8, 2002 * 7:30 p.m. * Seminole Soccer Complex, Tallahassee, Fla.

REACHING THE ACC SEMIFINALS
* No. 16/No. 5 seed Maryland advanced to the ACC Tournament Semifinals with a 4-2 victory over host No. 19/No. 4 seed Florida State last night as four Terp freshmen scored goals: Mallory Mahar (Medina, Ohio), Kimmy Francis (Richboro, Pa.), Ali Andrzejewski (Lutherville, Md.) and Simone Dekker (Ringwood, N.J.).

* The Maryland women's soccer team has advanced to the ACC Semifinals for the seventh time in school history and first in three years. The Terps also reached the ACC semis in 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997 and 1999.

* The Terps have reached the ACC Finals on two occasions in 1995 and 1997, when lost to champion North Carolina both times.

THE TERPS AGAINST THE TAR HEELS
* In the ACC Tournament, Maryland has lost all five previous matches to North Carolina falling in 1988 (3-0 in the semifinal), 1991 (3-0 in SF), 1994 (5-0 in SF), 1995 (3-0 in the final) and 1997 (4-0 in the final).

* Maryland picked up its first positive result against 17-time national champion North Carolina last Friday night at UNC, as they tied the No. 2 Tar Heels at Fetzer Field.

* All-time North Carolina won the first 18 matches in the series dating to the start of the Terps varsity program in 1987.

* Maryland has scored just two goals against the Tar Heels all-time, but both have come in the last games, in last year's 3-1 loss on Oct. 5, 2001 and in the 1-1 tie last Friday, Nov. 1. Junior captain Lindsay Givens (Downingtown, Pa.) was credited with the goal last Friday as her throw-in deflected off UNC defender Anne Felts and into the goal in the 48th minute to tie the game at 1-1.

* The tie vs. UNC was also Maryland's best-ever result against a team ranked in the top two in the nation. They will have a chance to win against a top-two team against UNC in the ACC semifinals.

HOT TERPS ON A ROLL
* Maryland has a 5-1-1 record in its last seven games after the 4-2 win over Florida State last night. The Terps avenged the only loss in a run as they fell to FSU, 1-0, on Oct. 25.

* With the 12-6-1 overall record, the Terps have equaled their best overall season win total since they went 12-9-3 in 1997. Maryland went 11-6-1 in the regular-season which was their most regular-season wins since that 1997 season.

* The Terps have scored 45 goals this season after scoring just 24 last season. The 45 is the most goals they have scored since they netted 55 in 1998.

* Of the 45 goals this season, 22 - nearly half - have come from freshmen as ACC All-Freshman team honoree Ali Andrzejewski leads the Terps with nine goals after scoring last night vs. Florida State. Fellow ACC All-Freshman team member and All-ACC second team award winner Mallory Mahar has five goals this season - all on headers. Lightning-fast freshman Simone Dekker also has five goals. Second-team All-ACC honoree Kimmy Francis has three goals in her first college season as a redshirt-freshman after sitting out all of last season.

SCORING EARLY, WINNING A LOT
* The Terps are 11-1 overall this season when they score the first goal of the game after Mallory Mahar put the Terps up 1-0 last night, scoring in the 27th minute. Maryland has its last six games in which it has scored first. The only loss came to then-No. 15 Notre Dame on Sept. 15.

* Maryland is 6-0 in games which they lead at halftime as they did last night, leading 2-1 after the first 45 minutes.

UPDATED PLAYER NOTES
* No. 0 Kristen Barnhill - Remains undefeated as a starting goalkeeper for the Terps as she moved to 5-0-1 with a win over FSU. She has allowed just seven goals over her last seven games. Overall, she is 6-1-1 with a 0.89 goals against average.

* No. 5 Jenny Biscoe - Notched two assists in the first round vs. FSU marking the third time in her career she had two or more assists in a game. She now has 13 career assists to rank tied for eighth in all-time assists at Maryland, one behind teammate Lindsay Givens who now has 14.

* No. 7 Simone Dekker - Scored her fifth goal this season vs. FSU and now has eight of her 13 points this season against ACC teams having scored three of her fifth goals against conference team in her first season.

* No. 9 Mallory Mahar - Scored her fifth goal vs. FSU in the first round, all five goals have come on headers as she converted a throw-in from Lindsay Givens. It was the fourth time this season Mahar's goal was the first of the game.

* No. 11 Kimmy Francis - Netted her third goal of the season vs. FSU. She now has six points in her last three games on two goals and two assists after a career-high four points on a goal and two assists at James Madison on Oct. 28.

* No. 18 Ali Andrzejewski - Scored her team-leading ninth goal vs. Florida State. It was her fourth game-winning goal of the season, which ties her for second in the ACC in that category. It also ties her for the Maryland school record for game-winners by a freshman as Terp all-time leading scorer and 50th Anniversary honoree Keri Sarver had four GWG in 1995. For Andrzejewski, the goal was also her first against an ACC team.

* No. 21 Lindsay Givens - Her assist on Mahar's goal was her third of the season and gives her 14 in her career to tie 1993 All-American Kelly Amonte for sixth on the all-time career assists list at Maryland. It was the second time this season her throw-in led to a Mahar goal as the pair hooked up vs. Notre Dame on Sept. 15. Of her nine assists over the last two seasons, eight have come on her powerful throw-ins.

* No. 22 Kristin McHugh - Credited with her first college point as she set up Kimmy Francis' goal vs. FSU.
