Dramatic Improvements Mark Women's Cross Country Season

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Here are several noteworthy performers from the 2002 season:

  • Several runners saw improvements in each one of their races this season. Freshmen Elisabeth Barker, Mallory Fratta, Erika Hogan, Katie Chiles, Becca Funk, Ashley Tremblay and junior Elizabeth Reda all consistently lowered their times throughout the season.

  • Sophomore Bridget Baker lowered her time at the 2002 Navy Invitational by 40 seconds, and her time of 19:35 at this year's Maryland Invitational was nearly 30 seconds faster than in 2001.

  • Freshman Allison Carney ran in three 5,000 meter races this season, and lowered her time in each race. She set a season-best time of 18:35.4 at the ECAC Championships, which was more than one minute faster than at the Covered Bridge Open in September.

  • Sophomore Courtney Fiorovanti lowered her 2001 times in four meets this year. Her times at the 2002 Navy Invitational and the Paul Short Invitational were both faster than in 2001. Her time of 25:17.0 at the 2002 ACC Championships was nearly two minutes lower than in 2001. At this year's ECAC Championships, she posted a time of 19:55.8, which was nearly 30 seconds faster than her time in 2001.

  • Freshman Katie Purcell lowered her time in each 5,000 meter race this season, starting with a 18:33.50 at the Covered Bridge Open and ending with a personal-best time of 18:03.5 at the ECAC Championships.

  • Juniors Lorna Dorland and Lora Stutzman each posted a lower time than in 2001 in one meet this year. Dorland's time at the 2002 Maryland Invitational was 20 seconds faster than in 2001. Stutzman's time at this year's Navy Invitational was nearly one minute faster than at last season's Navy meet.

  • Junior Kim Smith posted lower times in four meets this season. She was more than one minute faster than last season at this year's Navy Invitational, and nearly one minute faster than in 2001 at this year's Maryland Invitational, where she posted a season-best time of 19:09. Her time at this year's ACC Championships was nearly two minutes lower than in 2001, and her time at the 2002 ECAC Championships was almost one minute faster than at the same meet last season.
