Women's Tennis Defeats Kansas, 4-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Maryland women's tennis team concluded weekend play by defeating Kansas, 4-3, to improve to 3-2 on the season. The teams played the non-conference match at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Jayhawks fall to 2-1.
The contest began with doubles play. The undefeated duo of Delila Causevic (Silver Spring, Md.) and Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) edged by the Kansas sophomore twins, Courtney and Kristen Steinbock, 9-7. The Jayhawks' Paige Brown and Emily Haylock improved to 3-0, defeating Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) and Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.), 8-6. Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabretche, France) and Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) dropped their doubles match, 8-4.
However, Maryland dominated singles competition. Causevic won the at the No. 1 position, downing Cheryl Mallaiah, 6-1, 6-2. Marker and Floro, playing the No. 2 and 3 singles positions respectively, also notched straight set wins over their Jayhawk opponents. Jedrzejak fell to Brown, 6-4, 6-4 and Chavardes failed to muster out a win as well. The deciding match fell on the shoulders of freshman DeCamilla and senior Christi Wagenaar. In a come from behind victory, DeCamilla defeated Wagenaar in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
The Terps return home to host Dartmouth at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23 at the Tennis Center at College Park.
