CHARLESTON, S.C.- Junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) tied a career-high with four hits as he went 4-for-5 with three RBI and scored a run to help Maryland defeat James Madison, 10-6, in game number seven of the Charleston Crab House Shootout presented by Trademark Properties in Riley Park.
The Terrapins (2-1) jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning as they posted four runs. The runs came on a pair of two-run home runs from John McCurdy and sophomore catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.). The home run for Buffone was his first career homer for the Terps.
James Madison (2-2) started a comeback in the top of the second when centerfielder Travis Ebaugh reached on an error and later scored on a shortstop Nathan Doyle also reached on a error.The Dukes scratched another across in the top of the third inning as rightfielder Alan Lindsey scored on a RBI double by Ebaugh.JMU then scored two runs in the top of the fifth when catcher Matt Deuchler scored on a single by Lindsey.The second run came as the Dukes had the bases loaded and second baseman Mitch Rigsby earned a walk and designated hitter Pat Cunningham scored.
The Dukes took the 5-4 advantage the top of the sixth when leftfielder Jason Cushman walked to lead off the inning and scored on a single by Deuchler.
The Terps fought back in the bottom of the inning as Buffone and freshman leftfielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) singled to lead off the inning.Buffone then scored on a single by junior third baseman Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.).Frazier then scored on a RBI double by freshman second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.).Junior centerfielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) then grounded out to the right side to score George.Sargent then scored on an error by Rigsby.
JMU scored a run in the top of the seventh to draw the score to 8-6, but the Dukes were unable to mount enough offense to overtake the Terps.Maryland added runs in the bottom of the seventh and eight innings to take the final advantage of 10-6.
Maryland reliever Josh Andrews (Monrovia, Md.) picked up the victory after throwing 2.1 innings and striking out three. Sean Kane (West Chester, Pa.) pitched the final two innings to earn the save. The win was the first for Andrews at Maryland while it was also the first career save for Kane.
With the win, the Terps improved to 2-1 on the year. The 2-1 record for Maryland is its best start since the 1996 campaign, when the Terrapins opened the year 3-1. Maryland is back in action next Friday (February 22), when they take on Le Moyne in the 2002 Charleston Challenge in Charleston, S.C.
