CHARLESTON, S.C.- Maryland shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) went 4-for-6 with three RBIs to lead Maryland to an impressive 13-2 victory over the College of Charleston Saturday evening in Charleston, S.C. It was the second straight game that McCurdy tied his career high with four hits as Maryland belted a season-high 17 hits on the night while limiting the Cougars to four.
The Terps scored three times in the top of the first inning to take an early lead. After leftfielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) led off the game with a double, he then stole third and rightfielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) walked to set the table for McCurdy. McCurdy blasted a triple to right center to put Maryland ahead 2-0. Sophomore catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) drove in McCurdy on a RBI-groundout for the Terps' third run of the frame.
In the Maryland third, Whitmer got things going again by starting the inning with a single and then stole second. Whitmer came around to score Maryland's fourth run as McCurdy drove in his third run of the game with a RBI-single to make the score 4-0.
The Cougars scored their first run of the game in the bottom half of the third thanks to two Maryland errors. After Jasha Balcom walked, he advanced to second on a throwing error by Maryland starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) and later scored on a throwing error by second baseman Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.).
The Terrapins added single runs in the fifth and sixth inning to stretch their lead to 6-1. Junior third baseman Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) scored an unearned run in the fifth and delivered a RBI-single in the sixth for the Terps.
Maryland blew the game wide open in the seventh by scoring six runs. Senior first baseman Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) delivered a two-run single and Whitmer and Swope each tallied RBI-singles as the Terps put the game out of reach at 12-1.
Each team scored a run in the ninth to make the final score 13-2.
Stuart (1-0) pitched a solid 5.0 innings to earn his first win of the season. The New York native allowed just four hits and struck out five for the winners. Junior Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) was also dominant as he limited the Cougars to one unearned run on no hits with three strikeouts over the final four innings to earn his first save of the year.
The victory improved the Terps' record to 3-2 on the year while the Cougars are now 8-1. Maryland finishes its weekend in Charleston, S.C. tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. meeting with Marshall.
