CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- The Maryland baseball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end Friday as North Carolina defeated the Terrapins, 4-3, in the ACC opener for both schools. Maryland took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh before Carolina scored one run in both the seventh and the eighth to earn the victory.
In the first, North Carolina leadoff hitter Adam Greenberg hit a home run to right center to give the Tar Heels the early lead, 1-0. It was the third leadoff home run of the season for Greenberg.
In the fourth, Carolina got an important two-out, RBI-single, to make the score 2-0. First baseman Jeremy Cleveland sliced a single down the right field line to score third baseman Chris Maples for the Tar Heel run.
The Terrapins finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh with three runs. After two quick outs, sophomore first baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan. N.J.) delivered Maryland's second hit of the game with a bunt single. Following Buffone's single, Maryland stringed together three straight hits, including a RBI-double by freshman left fielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) and a bloop, two-run single by freshman designated hitter Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) to give Maryland its first lead of the contest, 3-2. The critical two-run single by Maxey came on a 1-2 count.
Carolina answered right back in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at three. After a leadoff walk by right fielder Mell Adams, second baseman Russ Adams singled up the middle off Maryland reliever Brad Lyons (Massapequa, N.Y.) to tie the game.
The Tar Heels regained the lead in the eighth when pinch hitter Chase Younts drove in Ryan Blake with a sacrifice fly to left, to give Carolina a 4-3 lead.
Carolina reliever Michael Gross (2-1) earned the win while Lyons (1-1) got the loss for Maryland. Maryland starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) pitched six innings and allowed three runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
With the loss, the Terps fall to 14-3 and 0-1 in the ACC while North Carolina improves to 8-8 on the year and 1-0 in the conference. The two teams continue their three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. in Boshamer Stadium.
