
Seven-Run First Inning Propels Maryland Past UMBC, 10-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Sophomore catcher Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) tied a career-high by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Maryland to an easy 10-4 victory over UMBC Thursday afternoon in college baseball action at Shipley Field. The Terps collected 17 hits on the day as six players recorded at least two hits in the 10-4 blowout.
The Terrapins put the game away early by sending 11 batters to the plate in the first and scoring seven runs. Buffone had two hits in the inning, including a RBI-single and a two-run double to lead the way. Maryland totaled eight hits in the inning including junior shortstop John McCurdy's (Crofton, Md.) 12th home run of the season.
Maryland stretched its lead to 8-0 in the third on a RBI-single by senior center fielder Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.).
Maryland starter Jared Stuart pitched 5.2 innings for his third win of the season. Stuart (3-0) limited UMBC to two hits and struck out six for the winners.
UMBC did manage to score twice in the fifth along with single runs in the eighth and the ninth. The Terps also scored two runs in the eighth inning on a pair of RBI-singles by McCurdy and freshman left fielder Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.).
McCurdy finished the game by going 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored while Frazier went 3-for-5 with a RBI and run scored. The three hits for Frazier tied a career-high for the Maryland rookie.
With the victory, Maryland improved to 16-5 overall while UMBC fell to 6-7. The Terps continue their five-game homestand Friday vs. Brown at Shipley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
