Williamsburg, Va. - The University of Maryland men's golf team recorded its best placing after any round in the spring after a score of 300 left the Terps in sixth place at the Colonial Intercollegiate at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course. The Terps' 12-over-par, first-round total trails first-round leader James Madison by 10 strokes.
Freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) shot his second sub-par round of the season and his career, a one-under-par 71. His steady and consistent performances on the Golden Horseshoe Green Course's front (35) and back (36) nines leave him in a tie for third with three other players, three shots off the pace set by Georgetown's Nick Cook (68).
Senior Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) gave the Terps a second top-10 performer by shooting a first-round 73. Brigham has now recorded four consecutive rounds of 73 or better.
Competing individually, senior Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) carded a two-over-par score of 74. Among the Terps' other scores, junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio) and sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) are tied for 38th place at 78 while senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) stands in a tie for 47th with 79. Play resumes Tuesday at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Course's Green Course.
