CLEMSON, S.C.- No. 1 Clemson defeated Maryland 7-2 to complete a three-game sweep of the Terrapins Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in Clemson, S.C. With the win, the Tigers improved to 23-1 overall and 3-0 in the ACC while the Terps dropped to 17-9 and 0-6 in the conference.
Clemson struck first in the second inning. Second baseman David Slevin got things started for the Tigers when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Designated hitter Jeff Hourigan followed with a two-run single to left, to give Clemson a 3-0 advantage.
The Terps came right back with one run of their own in the third, to cut the Tiger lead to 3-1. Junior shortstop John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.) delivered a RBI-single to right with two outs to score junior center fielder Daryl Whitmer (Walforf, Md.).
Clemson extended its lead in the fifth to 5-1 with two runs. David Slevin scored the first run of the inning on a wild pitch by Maryland starter Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) and center fielder Kyle Frank delivered a sacrifice run for the second run.
In the top of the sixth, the Terps added another run to cut the Tiger lead to 5-2. Freshman designated hitter Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) produced a RBI-groundout, to score sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.).
In the Tiger sixth, Clemson right fielder Jarrod Schmidt lined a double to right center to score first baseman Michael Johnson and put the Tigers ahead, 6-2.
Clemson added an unearned run in the eighth to close out the scoring at 7-2.
Clemson starter Steven Jackson (6-0) pitched five innings to pick up his sixth win of the season. Maryland starter Chris Clem was tabbed with the loss for the Terps. Clem (1-1) gave up five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
The Terps are back in action Tuesday, April 2 at William & Mary. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
