COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland baseball team sent 14 players to the plate in the first inning and scored nine runs on seven hits as the Terps cruised to an easy 23-6 victory over Vermont Friday afternoon at Shipley Field. The win was the ninth straight for the Terrapins as they scored 20-plus runs for the third consecutive game at home for the first time in school history.
The Terps tallied season-highs in runs (23) and hits (22) as they exploded for 22 runs after just three innings.
In the first inning, sophomore Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) connected on his first career home run at Shipley Field, a three-run shot, to start the scoring at 3-0. Maryland would score six more times in the inning including two-run doubles by freshman Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) and junior John McCurdy (Crofton, Md.).
The Terps scored another four runs in the second thanks to a two-run home run by Maxwell, a RBI-triple from senior Matt Swope (New Carrollton, Md.) and a RBI-double by McCurdy. The homer for Maxwell was his first career long ball as a Terp.
Another nine-run outburst in the third sealed the game for Maryland. The Terps totaled six hits in the frame including a two-run homer by freshman Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) and a three-run double by Buffone. Buffone finished the game with a career-high six RBIs by going 3-for-5.
McCurdy finished the contest by going a career-best 5-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Maxwell also had a career day, finishing with career-highs in hits (3) and RBIs (4).
Maryland starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) sailed through five innings to record his second win of the season. Stuart (2-0) allowed no runs on two hits and struck out four for the Terrapins.
Vermont starter Brian Robinson (0-1) lasted just 2/3 of an inning and surrendered nine runs on seven hits.
With the win, Maryland improved to 11-2 on the year and it was the ninth consecutive victory for the Terps. It was the season opener for Vermont as the Catamounts fell to 0-1. The two teams will resume the three-game series Saturday at Shipley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
