Women's Tennis Falls to Top Ranked Wake Forest, 6-1

WINSTON SALEM, N.C.- The University of Maryland women's tennis team lost, 6-1, to No. 4 Wake Forest. The Terps fall to 9-10, and 1-6 against ACC opponents. The Demon Deacons improve to 19-4 and 5-2 in the conference. Sophomore team captain Emily Marker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) notched the sole win for the Terps in singles play. Both teams have one more conference match remaining on their schedule, before the 2002 ACC Championships kick off on April 18 in Raleigh, N.C.
In doubles, all three Maryland teams fell to Wake Forest in close contests. At No. 1 doubles, Delila Causevic (Sarajevo, Bosnia) and Marker lost to Janet Bergman and Maren Haus, 9-8. The No. 1 national player, Wake Forest's Bea Bielik, was sidelined from the contest, suffering from an ankle sprain. At No. 2 doubles, junior Marta Jedrzejak (Sieradz, Poland) and freshman Emily DeCamilla (Sacramento, Calif.) lost to Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith, 8-6. The team of senior Pamela Floro (Manila, Philippines) and sophomore Chloe Chavardes (St. Nomlabreteche, France) also lost, 8-5.
At No. 1 singles, Causevic fell to Bergman, ranked No. 16th nationally, in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Floro, usually at No. 3 for Maryland, played at No. 2, dropping in three sets to Haus, 6-7, 7-5, 10-8. Marker defeated Coetzee, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 to give Maryland its only point of the competition. Jedrzejak fell to Wake Forest's Danielle Schwartz, 6-0, 6-1. DeCamilla and Chavardes lost in straight sets as well.
Terps will take on N.C. State on April 14 in Raleigh, N.C. to finish off their 2002 regular season.
