RALEIGH, N.C.-- The University of Maryland women's tennis team lost to Florida State, 4-3, in the first round of the 2002 ACC Championships, in Raleigh, N.C. The No. 7 Terps end their season 10-11, just shy of the .500 mark. Eighth seed Florida State moves on to face No. 2 North Carolina in the semifinal round tomorrow. In other tennis action today, No. 1 Duke defeated NC State, 4-0 and will face the winner of the No. 4 Clemson/No. 5 Georgia Tech matchup.
The Terps had the early advantage in the match, winning the doubles point. Delila Causevic, a two-time All-ACC selection, and teammate Emily Marker defeated Jessica Balbuena and Lauren Walker, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, junior Marta Jedrzejak and freshman Emily DeCamilla ousted Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny, 8-3. Since Maryland had already clinched the doubles advantage, the third match was recorded as a DNF (did not finish).
FSU rallied back to win the match on the singles side. Maryland was able to claim only the No. 1 and No. 3 singles matches. Causevic defeated Anca Dumitrescu in three sets, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1 and senior Pamela Floro won, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, over Denny.
Both team captain Marker and sophomore Chloe Chavardes fell in three sets. Marker lost to Gallovits, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) and Chavardes fell to Meredith Fish, 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0. Jedrzejak lost to Balbuena, 6-1, 6-3, and teammate DeCamilla dropped 6-3, 6-2 to Walker.
After returning home, the Terps await the decision to participate in the NCAA tournament, which will start May 10 in Raleigh, N.C.
