Men's Golf Looks To Cap First District II Season With NCAA Bid

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After finishing its regular season as the second-ranked team in District II by both Golfweek and Golfstat, the Terrapin men's golf team awaits a likely NCAA Division I Championship bid when regional pairings are announced May 6. The top four teams from the region gain selection to the championship. After a successful first season in District II that included two team titles, the Terps are seeking a team return to the championship field for the first time since 1999.

The Terps would be selected to either the East Regional, held May 16-18 at Ansley golf Club's Settin' Down Creek in Roswell, Ga. (Georgia Tech, host), or the Central Regional, held May 16-18 at Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark. (Arkansas, Little Rock, host). The NCAA Championship finals will be held May 29-June 1 at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State, host)

Terps Capture Second Place At Rutherford Intercollegiate

In its final regular season tournament, Maryland claimed second place at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State's Blue Course in University Park, Pa. The Terps, who led after the first round, were overtaken by tournament host Penn State's 10-under-par performance in the last two rounds and finished 13 shots behind the Nittany Lions with an eight-over total of 872.

The Terps placed four individuals in the top 20, including two in the top 10. Returning to the course where he won medalist honors at the 2000 Pennsylvania High School Championships, freshman Bobby MacWhinnie shot a two-under 70 in the final round to take ninth place. His 217 total finished 11 shots behind individual champion Jeff Turton of Penn State (206).

Junior John Moheyer earned his first top-10 result of the spring. He tied for 10th by shooting a two-over total of 218 for the second consecutive tournament. In his final regular season tournament, senior Corey Brigham recorded his sixth consecutive top-15 finish by claiming a share of 13th place at 219. Sophomore Tim Kane tied for 19th with 221 for his best result of the spring while senior Phillip Fenstermaker tied for 43rd with 229.

Terps At A Glance

In its first season in District II, Maryland defeated all District II competitors it faced except Penn State. The Nittany Lions won the three head-to-head meetings with the Terps by a combined 18 shots. Overall, the Terps finished 75-6 against District II in 2001-02.

According to the April 28 Golfweek/Sagarin individual ratings, Corey Brigham finished his senior season as the top golfer in District II and the 19th-rated ACC golfer with a 72.20 rating. In Golfstat's April 24 individual standings, Brigham is the top-ranked golfer in District II and 11th in the ACC with a 71.96 ranking.

In 2001-02, Brigham recorded six top-10 finishes in 12 tournaments and had 14 under-par scores in 29 rounds. He had nine rounds in the 60s and matched his career-best round with a 66 at Liberty.
