
Baseball Team Tops Temple, 8-4

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Junior designated hitter Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) and freshman center fielder Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) each drove in two runs to help lead Maryland to an 8-4 victory over Temple Wednesday evening in college baseball action at Shipley Field. The Terrapins totaled 11 hits on the night and five stolen bases en route to the four-run win over the Owls.
The Terrapins scored six runs over the first three innings to take a commanding 6-0 lead. In the first, senior catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and freshman first baseman Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) delivered a RBI-single to give Maryland the quick 2-0 lead.
In the second, the Terps scored another run on a RBI-single by sophomore third baseman Anthony Buffone (Manalapan, N.J.) to make the score 3-0. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Ray Gemmill was hit by a pitch to force in a run and put the Terps ahead 4-0.
Maryland scored another two runs in the third on one swing when Justin Maxwell blasted his second home run of the season to center field to give Maryland a 6-0 advantage.
Temple sliced the lead in half by scoring three runs in the fourth to make the score 6-3 Maryland. Al Roach delivered an important, pinch hit, two-run single for the Owls to get Temple on the scoreboard. Temple also scored an unearned run later in the frame for the team's third run of the contest.
The Terps got one run back in the fourth when junior second baseman Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) drove in his fifth run in two games to put Maryland back up by four, 7-3.
Each team scored once in the seventh to close out the scoring at 8-4.
Junior Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) earned the victory for Maryland to improve to 4-1 on the year. Temple starter Mike Caron (1-3) lasted just three innings and surrendered seven hits and six runs for the Owls in defeat.
With the win, Maryland improved to 19-9 on the season while Temple dropped to 7-12. Maryland is back in action this weekend when the Terps host Virginia in a key ACC series for both teams. The series opener will get underway Friday night at 7 p.m. at Shipley Field.
