COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Sophomore pitcher Jeff Kamrath tossed a four-hit shutout for Virginia as the Cavaliers blanked Maryland, 5-0, Friday night in ACC baseball action at Shipley Field. Kamrath struck out five Maryland batters and held the Terps scoreless for the first time this season.
For most of the game, Virginia led 1-0 after scoring one run in the first on a RBI-single by third baseman Dan Street. The Cavaliers held the same lead until the eighth when UVa added a run to extend the lead to 2-0.
In the eighth, shortstop Mark Reynolds delivered a key two-out, RBI-bunt single to score Virginia's David Stone.
The Cavaliers put the game away in the ninth with three runs. With the bases loaded and two out, Dan Street singled to center field to score three runs and put UVa ahead for good at 5-0. The third run scored on the play was unearned when Maryland center fielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) misplayed the ball and Street went all the way to third on the two-base error. Street led Virginia by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Maryland had its chances throughout the game as the Terps stranded eight runners. Maryland's best chance to score came in the eighth when the first two batters got on base via a single and walk. The Terps could not do anything in the inning, as Kamrath slammed the door by getting two fielder's choices and a groundout to spurn the Maryland rally.
Maryland freshman pitcher Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) kept the Terps in it by just allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work. Clem did receive the loss to fall to 1-2 on the year while Kamrath is now 5-2.
With the loss, the Terrapins dropped to 19-10 overall and 0-7 in the ACC while Virginia improved to 17-14 and 6-4 in the conference. The two teams will continue their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be aired live on Fox Sports South and Sunshine Network.
