Penhook, Va. - The winds were high and so were the scores, but the Terrapin men's golf team battled 40 mph wind gusts and the District II field to finish the Liberty Spring Classic's first round in second place, six shots behind leader Longwood College. No team could break 300 at The Water's Edge Country Club in Penhook, Va., but the Terps shot a first-round total of 307 and hold a four-shot advantage on the third-place duo of Radford and William & Mary.
"We had 40 mph winds down here all day - it was pretty unbelievable," Maryland coach Tom Hanna said. "For anybody to shoot 300, that was pretty good."
Freshman Bobby MacWhinnie (Pittsburgh, Pa.) displayed remarkable consistency on a day where no individual could match par. He went out with a score of 36 and came in with a 37 to tie for the first-round lead with Liberty's Paul Carey and Longwood's Lee Fisher at 73. MacWhinnie has a streak of four consecutive rounds of 74 or better.
Seniors Corey Brigham (Rumson, N.J.) and Phillip Fenstermaker (Rockville, Md.) carded first-round scores of 76 to tie for ninth. Fenstermaker boasted the best score of any individual-only competitor. The Terps' third score was recorded by junior John Moheyer (Lima, Ohio), who shot 39-38-76 and is tied for 12th, his best standing after any round in the spring. Sophomore Tim Kane (Simsbury, Conn.) shot an 81 and is tied for 42nd, while senior Pete Toole (Lancaster, Pa.) recorded an 82 and is tied for 45th.
"I'm not at all unhappy with the round," Hanna said. "The guys did play well and we'll see what happens tomorrow."
Play resumes tomorrow for the second and final round of the Liberty Spring Classic.
