COLLEGE PARK, Md. - - The University of Maryland announced the hiring of Brian Pensky and Jeff Causey as the new assistants for the Terrapins men's soccer team. Pensky was most recently at Loyola, where he was an assistant coach for the Greyhounds' women's soccer team. Causey was on 1996 MLS Champions DC United, and most recently played for the New England Revolution.
"I'm excited to bring in two people with outstanding character, tremendous enthusiasm, and a diverse soccer background that will add great value to the experience of our players for years to come," commented Maryland head coach Sasho Cirovski.
Like Cirovski's former assistant coach Jeff Rohrman, who left this spring to take the head coaching job at Wisconsin, Pensky comes most recently from the women's game. At Loyola, Pensky assisted a Greyhound women's team that won the 2001 MAAC Conference Tournament and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. Pensky has also been involved with the Region I Maryland girls' Olympic development program team since 1997, including a two-year stint as assistant coach for the under-15 team from 1999-2000, including a national runner-up finish in 2000. Pensky spent the summer of 2001 coaching the W-League's Maryland Pride, which reached the Final Four and won the Eastern Conference Championship.
Prior to his stint at Loyola, Pensky coached for four years at nearby George Washington University for its women's soccer program. He began his coaching career as a camp director for the Bullis School in Potomac, MD, where he later went on to teach and eventually piloted the boy's soccer team from 1996-98. While at the Bullis School, he was named 1997 High School Coach of the Year by the Maryland Ledger and paced the 18-1-1 IAC Champions to a No. 13 ranking in the nation.
Pensky holds a bachelor of economics degree from Emory University, as well as an "A" license from the United States Soccer Federation, an NSCAA Premier and NSCAA goalkeeping diploma.
According to Cirovski, "Brian is a highly regarded coach in this area in both the men's and women's game whom I have had strong ties with over the past seven years."
The Terps' second addition in the assistant coaching ranks is Jeff Causey, a 1994 graduate of ACC-rival Virginia with a bachelor's degree in history. Causey is a six-year MLS veteran and 1996 MLS champion with D.C. United. Causey also won the U.S Open Cup with D.C United. in 1996 before moving to New England for the 1997-2001 seasons. With the Revolution, Causey was a U.S. Open Cup finalist in 2001 as well as a part of New England's 2000 MLS playoff run. He finished his MLS career with a 1.80 goals against average in 89 games played with six shutouts and a 9-10-8 record.
Before his MLS career, Causey was a member of U.S.I.S.L. champion Richmond Kickers in 1995 and earned third-team All-American accolades at Virginia in 1993, the same year the Cavaliers won their third NCAA and ACC championship in a row. Causey still holds several of Virginia's goalkeeping records including the single-season record for saves (88 saves in 1990) and the career records for saves (249), shutouts (27), minutes played (7,050) and games played (77).
Causey's experience as a coach comes from his stint in 1995 as the Cavaliers' assistant, when the team won the ACC championship. He has also been a clinician and instructor for numerous camps and programs.
In addition to his on field experiences, Causey's record for community service is remarkable. For his involvement in community relations and service projects, he received Boston Sports Award as the Ron Burton Community Hero and was named the New England's Revolution's New York Life Humanitarian of the Year in 2000 and 2001.
"Jeff is a proven winner and knows and understands the culture of American soccer," says Cirovski. "That will greatly benefit many of our aspiring professionals."
