What's Up With Women's Soccer On The Road At UConn

Aug. 30, 2002

Maryland junior Audra Poulin and freshmen Danielle "Chunk" Malagari and Mariel "Wilbur" Wilner recap the Terps' second day at UConn and write about the win over Fordham.

We woke up around 8:00 a.m. this morning and got some breakfast at the hotel. Then we headed off to UConn's game field to get a feel for it. We held a light practice for about an hour there, then came back to the hotel for lunch.

Audra Poulin--
Soon it was time to get ready for the game! The rain cleared up, and we won 5-0! We were all very pleased with the result. But enough about our day, now you are going to hear from Chunk Malagari and Mariel Wilner "Wilbur" about their FIRST COLLEGE GAME!

Danielle Malagari and Mariel Wilner--
First things first. I got the nickname of Chunk because I do a great impression of Chunk from the 1980's movie "the Goonies." Not because I'm overweight I still make my times for fitness. With Wilbur, it just goes with her last name.

Well... it was our college debut and we were very intimidated. Not knowing what to expect when we stepped onto the field. Our nerves calmed down by the time the game started, although Wilbur didn't know where to go when her name was called for the starting line-ups. The team just hit her hands and pushed towards the center circle.

As the whistle blew the team was very excited to get the season under-way. The first ten minutes the team seemed tentative but eventually settled down and we played our game. Fellow freshman Ali Andrzejewski started the game off with a goal 15 minutes in. That was when the nerves flushed out of our systems.

Meanwhile, Chunk was still a bit nervous and was kind of flustered when the coach called her name to get into the game. Things went a bit smoothly but it was not what she expected. We finished the match with 4 more goals and everyone one got the opportunity to play. We are past that now and we are looking forward to the battle with UCONN. GOOO TERPS!

P.S. -- Dinner was very good at TGIFriday's. MMMM!

This is Audra, Chunk, and Wilbur signing off from Connecticut!
