College Park - Former Maryland outfielder Michelle Burrell was named as an assistant coach to Gina LaMandre's squad. Burrell replaces her former teammate Amy Sandler, who leaves the staff to pursue graduate work and a position in the athletic department's academic support and career development unit.
Next season will mark Burrell's sixth year with the softball program. After her playing career, Burrell voluntarily assisted the coaching staff in its every day operations in 2002. LaMandre feels that Burrell's experience with the program will be a great contribution to the team. "We're very excited to have Michelle as part of the staff. She knows the program, and is committed to seeing the program succeed. We were glad to have Amy Sandler for the past few seasons. We wish her the best of luck as she moves into her graduate work, and we think Shelly will step in right where Amy left off."
Burrell received many honors during her collegiate playing career. As the Terrapins' top hitter her senior year in 2001, she captured spots on the All-ACC team, Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team, Verizon Academic All-District II second team and Terrapin Invitational All-Tournament team. She also led the team in several offensive categories such as runs scored, hits, doubles, and stolen bases.
