College Park, Md. - Despite suffering a 2-1 loss to the current Maryland softball team, the Terps of yesteryear were all smiles Sunday in the first-ever Alumni Softball game.
The Alumni team struck first in the sixth inning when former assistant coach and second baseman Amy Sandler (Class of '99) doubled. In the next at-bat, Sandler scored on a Sarah Putnam (Class of '00) double. The Alumni team's rally was killed when Jen Shellhammer (Class of '01) was gunned down at the plate after current assistant coach and catcher Michelle Burrell's (Class of '01) sacrifice fly to left field.
All-American pitcher and Alumni team starting pitcher Kelly Shipman (Class of '99) held the current Terps to two hits in her first two innings of work. After being spelled by Shellhammer for three innings, Shipman returned in the bottom of the sixth and gave up a leadoff single to Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.). After first baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) was hit by a pitch, catcher Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) hit a grounder to Shipman. Shipman made a throwing error to first, which scored Peel and advanced Callaway to third. With runners at second and third and two outs, Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.) drove home the go-ahead run with a single to center.
Maryland welcomed back the following softball stars for the day's festivities:
Class of 1999: Amy Sandler, Kelly Shipman

Class of 2001: Annemarie Browne, Michelle Burrell. Jennifer Potzman, Jen Shellhammer
