
Five Terps Named To ACC 50th Anniversary Softball Team

Greensboro, N.C. - Five former Maryland softball players were named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Softball Team announced Thursday, Sept. 5 by league commissioner John Swofford. The team was voted on by all five ACC softball institutions. Florida State led the conference with 24 players named, North Carolina and Virginia both had ten players selected, and three Georgia Tech players were named to the 52-player Golden Anniversary team.
The five Maryland players named to the team are listed below, along with their career accomplishments.
Amanda Bettker (1999-2002) Finishes her career as Maryland's second-most accomplished pitcher only to Kelly Shipman ... 2001 and 2002 NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region first team selection ... 2001 and 2002 ACC All-Tournament honoree ... Ranks second in career victories, ERA, innings pitched, strikeouts, shutouts, complete games and appearances.
Michelle Burrell (1998-2001) Four-year starter for the Terrapins having played in all but two games in her entire career ... 2001 NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second team member ... 2001 All-ACC selection ... 2001 ACC All-Tournament honoree ... Listed among the top-ten Maryland career leaders in nearly every statistical category, including the top-five in games played, games started, at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, walks, sacrifice hits, sacrifice flies and stolen bases ... tied for first in career doubles and stolen bases ... Listed on the on Maryland's 1999-2000 Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and was an ACC honor roll selection in 1998.
Cortney Madea (1997-2000) 1998 NFHCA Mid-Atlantic All-Region second-team selection ... 1997 All-ACC honoree ... Two-time NFHCA All-America Scholar-Athlete (1997, '98) ... Listed tenth in ACC history with 107 RBI and second all-time at Maryland ... Ranks in the Maryland top-ten in all offensive categories, and in the top-five in games played, games started, doubles, triples, home runs, RBI and sacrifice flies.
Jennifer Potzman (1998-2001) Filled the Terrapins' shortstop position for her entire four years; is the only softball player in Terrapin history to start and play in every game of her career ... ACC's all-time leader in walks ... A two-time All-ACC selection (1998 and 1999) and 1999 NFCA All Mid-Atlantic Region honoree ... Ranks in the top-five in every category in the Maryland record books, and is the all-time leader in games played, games started, runs scored, triples, walks and RBI ... Her career batting average ranks third all-time at Maryland and her hits total ranks second ... Listed on the 1998-99, 1999-00 and 2000-01 ACC honor roll, and on the 1999-00 Maryland Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll ... A 1998 NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete ... Recipient of 2001 District II Academic All-America honors.
Kelly Shipman (1996-1999) Third-team All-America honors in 1999 and ranks among the all-time leaders in the ACC pitching and batting record books ... Led Maryland to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1999 ... all-time ACC leader in innings pitched, complete games and strikeouts ... Maryland career leader in wins, ERA, shutouts and appearances ... ranks among the top -ten in the ACC in home runs, hits, runs scored and walks ... Maryland's leader in doubles and triples as well ... 1999 ACC Player of the Year ... 1997 ACC Tournament MVP ... three-time All-ACC selection (1996, 97, 99); two-time ACC All-Tournament selection (1996, 97) ... 1996 ACC Rookie of the Year ...
