No. 25 Women's Gymnastics Places Third In Tri-Meet

Jan. 19, 2003

Raleigh, NC - The No. 25-ranked University of Maryland women's gymnastics team placed third at the tri-meet held at NC State. The Wolfpack finished first with a score of 193.850, while Ohio State placed second with a 192.275. The Terps ended the day with a 191.900. Despite the low team finish, the Terps competed well individually, placing in the top four in three of the events.

Junior Rachel Sibert placed second on the vault, with a score of 9.700. Sibert, who was sidelined last season due to a shoulder injury, has been a valuable asset for the Terps in 2003. Sibert posted a team-high 9.750 on the vault at the Bahamas Breeze Invitational a week earlier, and she repeated her domination on the vault at Raleigh. Ohio State's Jill Weber, who came in first with a 9.800, edged Sibert.

On the floor and the beam, freshman Rachel Martinez led the way for the Terps, placing third and fourth, respectively. Martinez earned a 9.825 for her floor routine and a 9.750 on her beam performance. Junior Sarah Hoenig, a 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, tied for fourth place on the floor. Her teammate, senior Catherine Gardner also finished tied for fourth on the beam with a 9.750. NC State's Leah Sabo won the all-around with a 38.775.

The Terps will play host to Temple on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. in the small gym at the Comcast Center, the new home for Maryland gymnastics. Admission to all home meets is free.
