The NCAA men's basketball champions of the University of Maryland were recognized on Monday night, January 27 as 2002's Team of the Year at the 99th annual Philadelphia Sports Writers Association Awards Banquet, at the Hilton Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J.

On hand to accept the honor was Terrapins' head coach Gary Williams, a native of Collingswood, N.J., who earlier in 2002 was recognized as the Eastern College Coach of the Year by the Herb Good Basketball Club.

Maryland completed a 32-4 season with a 64-52 victory over Indiana last April 1 in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Terrapins also defeated Siena, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Connecticut and Kansas in tournament games en route to the final.
