Men's Swimming Tops Duke, 156-78

DURHAM, N.C. - The University of Maryland women's swimming team, currently ranked No. 15 in the nation, defeated Duke Friday night, 150-79, for their 11th straight victory this season. The team is now 11-0 overall, 3-0 in the ACC.
The Terrapin men also recorded a win, outscoring the Blue Devils, 156-78. The team improved to 4-4 for the year and 1-2 in the ACC with their first conference win of the season.
The women's team swept the freestyle events en route to the victory, starting with sophomore Cynthia Weir (Irwin, Pa.), who earned two victories in the 50-yard freestyle (24.29) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.28).
Junior Linneah Riedlinger (Greenbelt, Md.) came away with a victory in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:34.51, senior Shandra Johnson (Omaha, Neb.) won the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.80) and junior Elyse Corwin (Orinda, Calif.) won the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.37) to complete the sweep.
The freshman came up big for the women against Duke, including Barbara Sumrall (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who won the 100-yard butterfly with a personal best time of 56.53. The other freshman winners wereInbal Levavi (Ichud, Israel) in the 200-yard IM (2:06.68) and Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary) in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.63).
Other winners for the Terrapins were sophomore Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.) in the 100-yard backstroke (57.65) and sophomore diver Rebecca Rudolph (Marietta, Ga.) on the 1-meter board (275.85).
The men were led by sophomore Brad Schertle (Baltimore, Md.), who has been coming on strong in the distance freestyle events as of late. He dominated against Duke, winning both the 500-yard freestyle (4:45.57) and the 1000-yard freestyle (9:48.58).
Other winners for the men's team were sophomore Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) in the 100-yard backstroke (51.88), sophomore Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.) in the 50-yard freestyle (21.44) and junior Mark Hill (Rye Brook, N.Y.) in the 100-yard freestyle (46.77).
The men won both diving events, getting strong performances from senior Chris Roddy (Silver Spring, Md.) and junior Steven Vigilante (Plano, Texas). Roddy came away with the victory on the 3-meter board with a score of 302.33 points, and Vigilante won the 1-meter board with a score of 273.23.
Both teams will travel to North Carolina for tomorrow's double dual meet with the Tar Heels and Georgia Tech. That meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00
