Speese Takes Fourth as Terps Wrap ACCs

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Freshman David Speese finished fourth in the 200 breast as Maryland capped the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Saturday.
Speese captured the Terps' top showing of the championships with an NCAA B-cut mark of 1:58.04 and shaved over a second off his prelim time. The freshman also broke a Maryland school record with his finals swim Saturday. Colin Stang and Anderson Sloan took 19th (2:03.09) and 22nd (2:05.64) in the C-final, respectively.
Maryland put together a stellar showing in the 200 fly with four swimmers making Saturday night's finals. Sean Stewart took 10th in the 200 fly (1:46.76). Kyle Madley (15th - 1:49.56), Spencer Sterling (17th - 1:49.07), and Jeff Winters (24th - 1:54.26) followed Stewart in the event.
Bradley Dillon took 10th in the 200 back (1:45.57), another NCAA B-cut performance for the Terps, who finished ninth in the final team standings at the championships. Andrew Relihan touched the wall in 15th place (1:47.19).
John Hauser notched additional points with an 11th place finish in the 100 free (44.15), a B-cut mark. Charlie Rommel finished behind Hauser in 18th (44.96).
Matthew Tynan (15:46.27) and Alex Spina (15:50.73) led the Terps with 19th and 21st place finishes, respectively.
The Terps wrapped up the championships with another B-cut relay as the 400 free relay of Hauser, Rommel, Winters and Dillon took ninth (2:59.41).
The diving team participated in the championships last week during the women's championships. Jack Clewlow took 15th in the 1-meter (315.75) and 16th in the 3-meter (330.30) and 14th in the platform (302.65) to lead Maryland. Tim Tolino was 26th in the 1-meter (236.10) and 25th in the 3-meter (239.30).
Virginia edged Virginia Tech to capture the 2012 ACC Championships.
