COLLEGE PARK, Md -- The University of Maryland gymnastics team gave fans a preview of the upcoming season at the Intrasquad scrimmage on Friday night in College Park. The White team comprised of senior co-captain Sarah Hoenig, junior Ashley Oberdorff and sophomores Rachel Martinez and Ginny Scott won the meet with the score of 76.750.
Martinez won the all-around with the score of 38.400, followed by Oberdorff who posted a 37.450. Senior co-captain Katherine Schroeder rounded off the top three with a third place finish of 37.000.
On the vault, Martinez, sophomore Rebecca Ruppert and freshman Marisa St. Louis landed high scores. Martinez hit a 9.750 on her vault, while both Ruppert and St. Louis posted a 9.650. Martinez was named second team all-conference on the vault last season, hitting a career-high 9.925 at the EAGL Championships.
Bars specialist, junior Mandy Pascual won the event with a team high score of 9.750. Pascual, a first team all-conference selection in 2003, was followed closely by Martinez who earned a 9.700. Sophomore workhorse Kristi Skowronski closed out the top three with a 9.650.
Hoenig, a first team all-conference honoree on the beam in 2003, led the Terps on her main event, with a 9.700. Sophomore Alex Gatch, a second team all-conference selection came in second with a 9.650, while Martinez matched Cameron Logan's 9.650 for a share of third.
All 16 Terps competed in the fan-favorite floor exercise portion of the scrimmage. Hoenig earned a 9.700 while Gatch notched a 9.600. Skowronski came in third place with a 9.500.
St. Louis was the lone freshman competing in the all-around and ended the night with a 36.050. The Terps will begin regular season on the road against Ohio State, on Jan. 10.
