Postgame Quotes: West Virginia 78, No. 25 Maryland 77 (OT)

Dec. 7, 2003

Recap| Box Score| Notes

Maryland Head Coach Gary Williams
On Maryland's play:
"When you are down 16, you play a certain way, and when you come back from 16 down you play a certain way. We have not really been able to figure out how to do that during the first 40 minutes of the game. This is our second overtime game which we could have won in regulation. When you do that, you are playing Russian roulette in those situations. West Virginia did a good job in overtime and won the game."

On Maryland:
"Our problem is trying to play at the same level with all the players at the same time. There are no excuses. It is on me to make that happen. We are going to Florida Wednesday for a very tough game. We will be a good team if we continue to work hard. We did not work at periods in the game, and that is what cost us today. We have a lot of things to work on. There are a lot of things to do"

On the decision to put in Mike Grinnon in overtime:
"He had the most experience, and I knew that he would work hard. I thought he played great out there."

On the team's identity:
"We have to prove which team we are. We have to prove if we are the team that beat Wisconsin, or the team that was down 16 today. We have to decide which team we want to be."

On Maryland's difficult schedule:
"We play nationally ranked teams, and that is who we lost to yesterday - a nationally ranked team. It is very difficult to come back from that to play again today. We are playing a good schedule. We just played a Big East team out there today. We do not play a bunch of cupcakes, and now we have to come back and play the No. 1 team in the country. There is nothing there saying whether we're good or anything. We could be 6-0 if I scheduled this year differently."2003 BB&T Classic - MCI Center - Washington, D.C. Dec. 7, 2003

West Virginia Head Coach Beilein
Opening Statement:
"What I liked best about this win is that we won it in overtime. You do not have to blow a lead like that but when you play against a team like Maryland, it is tough. We are not Gonzaga and we are not going to be able to put away a team of that caliber. The fact that they tied it and were up by three in overtime before we won was huge for us to understand what it takes to win a game."

On the clutch play of Jamon Durisseau-Collins:
"That grows on people. He has been shooting really well in practice and we wanted that situation late in the game."

On Tyler Relph:
"I sensed that he was down after the game [yesterday] and I told him to go right back into the game [today]. He had eight assists and one turnover. He is known to be an outside shooter. For him to take care of the ball like that and have a couple of steals is huge in our development."

On MD's full-court pressure:
"We practiced knowing that we are either small or slow in the backcourt and that we will get pressured. So in the preseason we played a lot of three on four with one trapper all over the place, so we can see the floor and find the open man."

Maryland guard Chris McCray:
On the tough loss:
"Coach is putting us in position to win games, we are just not going in there and making it happen. Everybody has to look in the mirror and change our attitudes. We can not just play hard when we are down in games, we have to play hard from start to finish."

Maryland center Jamar Smith:
On the West Virginia perimeter attack:
"It happened again, three point shots just killed us. By the time we figured it out and came back from the lead, it took a lot out of us. I think my man had a three pointer in overtime and that took them up so we were forced to foul a lot."

Maryland forward Nik Caner-Medley:
On the state of the team:
"I think it's tough to lose two games in a row. Obviously nobody feels good about it. It is one of those things that personally I feel real bad about, and losing twice in two days is real tough."

On taking few shots:
"I guess it was the way they were playing. That's not really something I am really worried about right now. I will look at the tape to see what happened with that but I really do not know."
