Softball Terps Split Season-Opening Doubleheader

Feb. 14, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

ATHENS, Ga. - Sophomore hurler Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) dominated the Drexel Dragons offense with a 5-hit, 10-strikeout performance on Friday. The 2-1 win came in the second game of Maryland's season opening doubleheader at the Georgia Invitational. The Terrapins took a 4-2 loss earlier in the day to the Boston College Eagles.

Second baseman Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) got the Terp offense started in the first inning with a double down the right field line. Peel advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on catcher Casey Leiter's (Lake Stevens, Wash.) single. The Terps struck again in the third thanks to aggressive baserunning by sophomore Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.). Tweedy led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. She then stole third and scored the go-ahead run on Monica Cyphert's (Warren, Ohio) single to third base.

In the opening game, Boston College struck early. The Eagles capitalized on a series of defensive miscues in the first inning and staked a 2-0 lead. Maryland fought back to tie the game 2-2 in the third inning. Center fielder Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) led off with a triple down the right field line. Sweeney went on to score after Boston College botched a play at the plate. Later in the inning, Leiter doubled in third baseman Crystal Rizzuto (San Leandro, Calif.).

The Eagles bounced back and scored a run in both the third and fifth innings to seal the 4-2 win. With the exception of first baseman Jillian Callaway's (Brandywine, Md.) single in the sixth inning, Boston College pitcher Michelle Daly silenced Terrapin bats for the remainder of the game. Maryland starting pitcher Monica Cyphert took the loss.

The Terrapins will resume play Saturday at 2 p.m. against No. 17 Georgia. The team will also play at either 4 p.m. or 6 p.m. depending on how the tournament brackets are aligned after the preliminary round of games.
