COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Despite another 20-point effort from senior guard Renneika Razor (New York, N.Y.), the Maryland women's basketball team lost 71-67 to Virginia Thursday night at the Comcast Center. The Terps are now 10-15, 4-10 in the ACC while Virginia raises its record to 13-12, 7-7 in the conference.
Maryland suffered through a rough first half, shooting only 28 percent from the field and netting only 23 points in the opening half. Turnovers killed the Terrapins in the opening 20 minutes, giving the Cavaliers 13 points off of 12 Maryland turnovers and sending Virginia into the locker room up by 16 points, 39-23.
All-ACC candidate Razor had nine points to pace Maryland in the first half, while Anna Prillaman led Virginia with nine as well. Brandi Teamer added eight first-half points for the Cavs.
The Terps nullified the 16-point deficit by the 10:10 mark, going on a 28-11 run to open the half. Early second-half points came from conference all-freshman candidate Chrissy Fisher (Rumson, N.J.), who netted seven in the run and Razor, who had 10 in the early going. Two free throws from Fisher gave Maryland their first lead since the 11:14 mark in the first half, 51-50.
The game was knotted three times before Virginia took a lead at the 7:02 mark, 58-57, on a Teamer free throw. UVa stretched the lead to seven before the Terps chipped away again and came within two points with 47 seconds remaining. It was not to be, however, and in a replay of the Terps' Wake Forest game of exactly a week ago, Maryland came up four-points short at the buzzer.
Teamer finished the day with a team-high 23 points and added four blocks for Virginia in the win. Liz Sahin added 13 for the Cavaliers while Anna Crosswhite netted 12. Razor tallied 23 points and grabbed 11 boards for her first double-double-this season in the loss. Fisher notched her seventh game out of the last eight in double figures, ending with 15 points.
