Game 1 | Game 2
TAMPA, Fla. -
For the third time this season, Maryland (3-3) bounced back from a loss to win the second game of its doubleheader. The Terrapins fell in their first game to Seton Hall, 2-1, then fought their way to a 2-1 victory against Indiana at the first day of the USF-Best Western Tournament.
Junior centerfielder Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) led the way for the Terrapin offense throughout the doubleheader, contributing a double, run scored, and stolen base in her 2-for-5 performance.
In the second game, Maryland started off the scoring in the fourth inning when sophomore Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.) drove in Crystal Rizzuto (San Leandro, Calif.) off a sacrifice fly. Indiana struck back to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning, but Maryland retook the lead in the fifth when catcher Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) bunted home Sweeney to put the Terps ahead 2-1. Sophomore Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched a complete game and struck out four for her third win of the season.
In the first game, Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Sweeney led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on Jen Peel's (St. Leonard, Md.) sacrifice bunt. The speedy centerfielder swiped third base with two outs, then scored on a throwing error by Pirate catcher Meg Berry. Berry's bat later powered the Pirates to victory when her two-run homer to right center put Seton Hall ahead for good, 2-1.
Despite allowing a two-run home run, junior Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) pitched well for the Terps. Cyphert (0-3) struck out six batters and gave up four hits. The double-threat was also the lone Terrapin to get a hit off Seton Hall starter Christina Shanko (1-0). Shanko maintained a no-hitter for six and one-third innings and fanned five Maryland batters.
The Terps will resume action at the USF-Best Western Tournament on Saturday evening. They are scheduled to take on Hofstra (2-3) at 5:00 p.m. and Radford (0-3) at 7:00 p.m.
