Softball Splits Final Day At USF-Best Western Tournament

Feb. 23, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

TAMPA, Fla. - After having games against Radford and Hofstra rained out on Saturday, Maryland (4-4) earned a 2-0 victory against Radford and dropped a 7-1 decision to USF-Best Western host South Florida (16-4) on Sunday afternoon. The Terps end the weekend-long tournament with a 2-2 record.

Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) shut down the Highlander offense in the first game, allowing only one hit, which game in the fourth inning. She also struck out 11 in the complete game shutout. Maryland scored their first run in the first inning thanks to aggressive base running by Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J). Sweeney led off with a walk, stole second, and then advanced to third on a groundout by second baseman Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.). She scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.).

The Terrapins struck again in the fourth inning. Leiter led off with a double to left field. Two outs later, senior first baseman Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) doubled Leiter home.

In the second game, starting pitcher Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) held the Bulls scoreless until the fourth when a fielding error and walk put two runners on base to start off the inning. Aditays (3-1) struck out the next two batters and then gave up a home run to right fielder Holly Groves.

South Florida struck again in the sixth inning. Aditays walked lead off hitter Renee Oursler. The following batter, shortstop Christie Chapman, doubled to left field to put two runners in scoring position. Once again, Groves came up big for the Bulls and doubled in both Oursler and Chapman to put USF ahead, 5-0. Cyphert came in to pitch the remainder of the game. South Florida came out of the sixth inning with a 7-0 lead.

The South Florida team is in the midst of a 10-game win streak that began with a victory over No. 8 Oklahoma at the University of Florida Tournament.

Maryland scored their lone run in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) led off with a single. Freshman Natalie Grossman (Skillman, N.J.) followed with another single. Moczulski was replaced on the basepaths by pinch runner Crystal Tweedy (Dumfries, Va.). Tweedy advanced to third on a ground out and scored when Sweeney grounded out to the pitcher.

The Terrapins will begin their first home series of the season on Saturday against local rival Towson at 2:00 p.m. and Fairfield at 4 p.m.
