Final Stats
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
On a frigid but sunny day at the Artificial Turf Facility, the No. 5 Maryland Terrapins and No. 2 Princeton Tigers played to a 6-6 after 65 minutes of action in the first preseason scrimmage for both teams.
Junior attackman Dan LaMonica (Parkton, Md.) led the way with a goal and four assists for the Terps. Freshman Bill McGlone (Swarthmore, Pa.) tallied two goals including the game-tying goal in the fourth quarter before the team's played a scoreless tie for the final 9:11.
Jason Doneger scored three goals for the Tigers and Sean Hartofilis netted a pair in the tie. Ryan Boyle had a goal and three assists for Princeton.
"A lot of people try to look at the things they can do in scrimmages," said second-year Terp coach Dave Cottle. "But, I try to look at the things we don't do well. In playing the king of the half-field in Princeton and then the king of the full-field in Syracuse, we will get a good idea of what we can't do and what we need to work on."
The game was dominated by the Terps early as they jumped on top 3-1 after the first quarter outshooting Princeton 12-4. Willy Passavia (Stony Brook, N.Y.), Mike Mollot (Holbrook, N.Y.) and McGlone all scored off assists from LaMonica to make it 3-1 after a Tiger goal by Doneger.
Princeton came out and tied the game in the second quarter as Sean Hartofilis scored twice to make it 3-3 with 13:08 left in the first half. LaMonica netted his only goal to give the Terps the lead again at 4-3 with 10:50 left in the half. Matt Urlock (Lutherville, Md.) made it 5-3.
Doneger scored twice more to tie the game just before halftime with his third goal of the game coming with 10 seconds left in the half.
Ryan Boyle put Princeton on top in the third quarter as the Tigers had the better of the play in that stanza outshooting the Terps 11-0.
But McGlone tied the game with a rifle shot off a pass from J.R. Bordley (Vienna, Va.) for the 6-6 tie.
In nets, Maryland's Danny McCormick (McLean, Va.) played the first three quarters and made 12 saves. Princeton's Julian Gould also played the first 45 minutes and made 11 saves.
The Terps return to action in their final scrimmage on Thursday morning, as they travel to No. 1 Syracuse for a 11 a.m. start in the Carrier Dome.
The regular-season opener is slated for Feb. 22 against No. 6 Georgetown at 11 a.m.
