College Park, Md. - No. 14 Wake Forest (12-5, 2-0 ACC) dealt the Maryland Terrapins (5-9, 0-2 ACC) their third straight loss today, pounding out 19 hits and 12 runs in front of 340 at Shipley Field.
Terp starter Chris Clem (1-2) gave up six runs (five earned) despite allowing 14 Wake hits in 5.1 innings. For the game, Terp pitchers stranded 13 baserunners, a day after leaving 12 Demon Deacons on base.
The Terps have been outscored 17-6 in the two losses, a respectable improvement over the 37-6 margin in the teams' first two meetings last year.
Freshman third baseman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.), making his sixth consecutive start, went 3-for-4 to raise his batting average to .359, and along with shortstop Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) was the only Terp to collect more than one hit. Wake, meanwhile, had seven players record two or more hits, three of which had three hits.
Wake slugger Jamie D'Antona continued to hurt Terp pitching, going 4-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. After going 0-for-3 in his first three at bats of the series, D'Antona has gone 6-for-7 with six RBI. The Demon Deacons slugged four home runs in the game, including two by Jeff Ruziecki.
Pitcher Tim Morley (2-0) got off to a slow start, walking three batters and spotting Maryland a 2-0 lead, but settled down as the Wake hitting heated up. The Demon Deacons score three runs in an inning four times in the game.
Outfielder Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) was caught stealing for the first time this year after swiping seven straight. As a team, Maryland is 16-for-20 on stolen base attempts while their opponents have stolen ten.
Maryland and Wake will conclude the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Shipley Field.
