TOWSON, Md. -- University of Maryland fell by a score of 196.625-194.350 to Towson University in its final regular season meet of the season, but the Terps still improved their regional qualifying score with one of their top five team performances of the season. Maryland ends its regular season with a 12-9 record, finishing 5-5 against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) opponents.
On the vault, Rachel Martinez, EAGL Gymnast of the Week, tied for first with a score of 9.9. Junior co-captain Katherine Schroeder and fellow teammate Rachel Sibert tied for seventh with a 9.70. Towson's Kristen Presutti captured the vault iitle with a 9.90.
On the bars, Martinez tied for third place with a score of 9.850. Towson's Jenn Baierlein took the event with a 9.925. Freshman Cameron Logan posted a career high of 9.80 on the uneven bars. Terps Sibert and Skowronski placed seventh in the event tied with a 9.750.
The Terps dominated the beam, with three Terps posting scores in the top three. Both junior Sarah Hoenig, the EAGL Specialist of the Week and a 2002 NCAA Regional Participant, and freshman Alexandria Gatch won the event with a 9.9. With the mark, Gatch ties her career high score, which she set on Mar. 12 against GWU. Senior Catherine Gardner tied for third place with a 9.850.
As a team, Maryland posted its highest score of the night on the floor, a 48.925. Towson's Kristen Presutti scored a perfect 10.0, the second of her career on any event. Terps Logan and Martinez finished close behind, notching a 9.850 and a 9.825, respectively.
Martinez finished third in the all-around with a 39.0. Towson's Presutti led all scores with a 39.60.
The Terps, who began the week ranked fifth in the region, still have one more opportunity to add to their regional qualifying score when they compete at the EAGL Championships this coming Saturday at the University of New Hampshire.
