TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
The Maryland Terrapins (8-11, 0-2) worked overtime but came away empty handed against No. 17 Florida State (25-9, 2-0). The Terps dropped two ACC games to the Seminoles, 6-2 and 3-2 in ten innings.
In the first game, Maryland struck first with a run in the top of the third. Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) led off with a single down the left field line, and Nneka Cardoza (Brockton, Mass.) reached on a sacrifice bunt and throwing error. A Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) single loaded the bases. Catcher Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) followed with a sacrifice foul out to left field, which scored Callaway.
Florida State answered with three runs in the bottom of the third thanks to two fielding miscues and a walk. The Seminoles tacked on another three runs in the fifth to go up 6-1. Maryland scored its last run in the top of the sixth off a Crystal Rizzuto (San Leandro, Calif.) double to centerfield.
In the second game, Maryland once again took an early lead. The Terps put a run on the board in both the first and fourth innings to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Florida State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to doubles by Jess van der Linden and Carly Brieske and a sacrifice fly by Beth Wade.
The Terps gathered only three hits after the fifth inning, but halted Florida State from scoring opportunities. In the eighth, Florida State loaded the bases with one out on back to back errors and a walk. The Terps stopped the 'Noles dead in the basepaths twice by completing fielder's choice plays to end the inning.
Florida State scored the winning run in the bottom of the tenth, loading up the bases on a single, fielder's choice and walk. With two outs, Brieske once again delivered for the Seminoles and drove in the winning run with a single to right field.
Maryland will head back to College Park this weekend for its home opener against Hofstra at 3 p.m. Saturday. The Terps will also take on Columbia following the Hofstra contest, and Delaware State at noon Sunday as part of the Maryland Invitational Tournament.
