Charlottesville, Va. - The Maryland Terrapins (6-16, 0-7 ACC) remained winless in conference play after falling 5-0 to the Virginia Cavaliers (15-8, 4-3 ACC) and starter Jeff Kamrath.
Kamrath (3-1), a second-team All-ACC selection last season, didn't let Maryland put the ball in play, limiting Terp hitters to just four hits while striking out eight and walking four in nine innings.
The complete game shutout was the Kamrath's second against the Terps, and the second of his career.
The loss marks the first time the Terps have been shut out this season, and the first since May 10, 2002 against Florida State. The Terp hit total was also a season-low, which was previously four in an eight-inning loss to Binghamton in the second game of a March 1 doubleheader.
After giving up 24 hits combined in his last two starts, sophomore starter Chris Clem (1-4) was more efficient, but to no avail. Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) was charged, with six runs (four earned) on just six hits as Virginia made the most of their baserunners.
The right-hander, who has given up nine unearned runs on the season, allowed two unearned runs in the fourth when his throw to get the lead runner sailed over third baseman Mike Costantino's head and into left field.
In the first, junior outfielder Matt Street scored on a single after reaching third on a leadoff double and advancing on a sacrifice bunt. The Cavaliers were able to add two more in the fourth thanks to Clem's throwing error, and strung together three consecutive hits to start the sixth to put up three more.
Justin Maxwell (Olney, Md.) collected two of the Terps' four hits, but was caught stealing in the first inning, two batters after Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) was picked off.
Nevertheless, Maxwell is still eating up ACC pitching, upping his season average to 13-for-27 (.481).
Reliever Justin Hulse (0-1) recorded his first strikeout in four appearances since striking out seven in 3.1 innings against Virginia Commonwealth on March 4.
Clem has struck out just 15 in 29 innings after punching out 49 in 50.2 innings as a freshman last season.
