SCOUTING FLORIDA ATLANTIC (9-9, 5-1 vs. Maryland)
The Lady Owls have faced several nationally ranked teams this season. The team has fallen in games against No. 1 UCLA, No. 2 Arizona, No. 20 Alabama, and No. 22/23 South Florida, yet captured two close games against No. 18/21 Ohio State during the Florida International Tournament in mid-February.
First baseman Pam Mazzarella heads up the Owls' offensive. She currently leads the team with a .312 batting average and has generated five RBI.
Sophomore Candice Freel (5-2) was named Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 24. The hurler one-hit Wisconsin during the FAU Worth Invitational and currently leads the team with a 1.59 ERA. She is also second in batters fanned with 24, next to teammate Amanda Morin (30).
SCOUTING ILLINOIS-CHICAGO (2-12, 5-1 vs. Maryland)
The Flames are in the midst of a 3-game losing streak, after opening the season with a seven-game losing streak. Similar to the Terps' match-ups, the Flames' games at the Holiday Inn-Select Festival were extinguished last weekend due to snow in the Tulsa area.
The Flames were last in action at the Troy Cox Classic in New Mexico, where top hitter Amanda Rivera was named to the all-tournament team after batting .538 (7-for-13), with two home runs and five RBI. Rivera is batting .400 on the season.
UIC's pitching rotation has struggled so far in the 2003 campaign. The staff's ERA is 4.60. The Terps hope to get their bats going against a staff that opposing teams have hit .325 against.
SCOUTING No. 23 OKLAHOMA STATE (10-3, 0-1 vs. Maryland)
The Cowgirls' biggest win of the season came in an 1-0 upset of No. 2 Arizona on Feb. 21. Oklahoma State won the pitcher's duel off a home run by centerfielder Jade Lindly. Lindly's knock was the only hit for the Cowgirls.
OSU's top pitcher, Lauren Bay, fanned 16 Missouri-Kansas City batters Tuesday to break the school's career strikeouts record with 775. Bay has three shutouts this season and sports a 0.73 ERA.
SCOUTING MICHIGAN STATE (10-3, 0-2 vs. Maryland)
The Spartans are riding a 7-game win streak into this weekend's competition. During this win streak, the team has taken two games from ACC competitor Virginia, one of which crowned them the Cougar Classic Tournament Champion.
The Terps and Spartans matched up twice last season, with the Terrapins winning both contests. In last year's Speedline Invitational, Monica Cyphert smacked a pinch hit walk-off homer to capture a 2-1 victory for the Terps.
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA (12-9, 0-0 vs. Maryland)
Young stars Melissa Ramirez and Jennifer Reed lead the Mocs' offense. Ramirez, a sophomore third baseman is batting .362 with a team-high 13 runs scored on the season. Her freshman teammate Reed leads the team in hitting (.377), home runs (4), and RBI (14).
The pitching rotation of Awbrey Winckler, Sara Meek, and Abby Cotrell sports a 1.93 ERA. Veteran hurler Winckler has fanned 77 batters in 80 innings this season.
