Game 2
PLANT CITY, Fla. -
The Terps (5-7) dropped both their games Friday at the Speedline Invitational, losing 5-1 to No. 23 Oklahoma State and 9-0 to Michigan State.
In the first game, the Terps scored their only run in the first inning, then quickly relinquished the lead once the Cowgirls came to bat. Oklahoma State scored three runs in the bottom of the first, then added one more in the next inning. Starting pitcher Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) pitched a complete game for the Terps. Cyphert (2-4) took the loss for Maryland. Lauren Bay (7-3) held the Terrapins to two hits and struck out 17 for the win.
In the second game, Maryland starter Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) held the Spartans hitless through the first two innings. The Michigan State offense fired up in the latter innings of the game, scoring in the next four innings. The Terrapins had an opportunity to score in the first inning. With one out, freshman Natalie Grossman (Skillman, N.J.) singled. Casey Leiter (Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Cyphert walked to load up the bases. After the Spartans made a pitching change, the Terrapins hit into an inning-ending double play. The Terrapins offensive leader was Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.), who went 2-for-3 in the game. Aditays (3-2) fanned two Spartan batters in the loss. The game was called in the sixth inning due to rain, which poured throughout the match-up. Spartans' reliever Katie Joosten captured the win.
Maryland resumes action at the Speedline Invitational Saturday, when the team takes on Tennessee-Chattanooga (15-10) at 2:00 p.m. Following the Chattanooga tilt, the Terrapins will advance into consolation bracket play.
