College Park, Md. - Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) had two stolen bases, a triple and four RBI today as the Terps (4-7, 0-0 ACC) avoided their second late-inning loss in as many days with a controversial 11-8 win over Marist (5-1).
Whitmer's two swiped bags moved him into sole possession of eighth all-time on the Maryland career list, passing All-American John McCurdy (2000-02) and Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Team selection Jim Norris (1968-71).
It was his four RBI, however, that helped propel the Terps to their first victory in three games, as the Terp pitching once again allowed Marist to mount a comeback in the latter stages of the game.
Chris Clem (Berwyn, Pa.) gave the Terps six solid innings, the third quality start by a Maryland starter in three games. He shut down Marist hitters to the tune of six hits, one earned run and four strikeouts before exiting to begin the seventh.
The Terps brought a 7-3 lead into that inning, which was quickly erased by the heart of the Red Foxes' lineup. Reliever Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) was able to get two outs on an RBI sacrifice fly and a pop out after allowing the first three batters to reach base in the inning.
But Todd Ainsworth (Hershey, Pa.), making his first appearance since Feb. 15, threw two wild pitches and gave up an RBI single to Marist second baseman Tim Allen as the Red Foxes crawled back ahead.
The hitting saved the day, with Whitmer and Maxwell both scoring on a Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) double in the bottom half of the seventh, and putting up another two in the eighth after capitalizing on Allen's two errors.
George's game-winning RBI was a welcome addition to a jam-packed weekend that saw him strike out two on Friday and record a loss in his first two career appearances as a pitcher, and walk four times and drive in three runs as a batter.
Chris Bowen (Glenwood, Md.) also came up big, settling down after a rough seventh inning and shutting down Marist for the final two inning to earn his first win of the season.
With a single in the first, Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.) extended his hitting streak to a team-high seven games.
Controversy erupted several times in the game when Marist coaches disagreed with the umpires' calls. On the field as the third base coach, Marist head coach Jim Tyrell was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. In the ninth, the remaining coaches were infuriated when Keith Brachold was called for interference, a crucial call that led to a double-play and helped Bowen close out the game.
The loss was the first of Tyrell's career as a head coach since moving from pitching coach in the off-season.
Despite two key errors, Allen leaves College Park after playing outstanding offensive baseball, slamming three home runs and seven RBI in three games. One of the home runs traveled an estimated 410 feet, bouncing off of the varsity team house in beyond left field.
The Terps hope to continue their momentum when they host Towson on Tuesday, March 11 at 3 p.m.
