Cyphert Shows No Mercy

April 13, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Things couldn't be better than junior pitcher Monica Cyphert's (Warren, Ohio) performance in game one of Sunday's doubleheader against Coppin State (7-16, 5-3 MEAC). She not only hit a three-run homer to lead her team to victory, but also pitched her first career complete game no-hitter as the Terps took a 4-0 contest from Coppin State. Maryland (13-13, 0-4 ACC) also broke out the bats in game two, winning 12-0 in five innings.

Cyphert (7-7) also had a career-high 14 strikeouts in the victory. Her previous career high came in 2002 where she fanned 13 batters during her 13-inning pitching performance against St. Joseph's. Cyphert was part of a combined perfect game against Morgan State in 2001. The no-hitter is Maryland's first this season, with the last no-hit game being tossed by Amanda Bettker on Apr. 10, 2002 against Towson.

Cyphert's homer came in the first inning. With one out, second baseman Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) reached on an error by the shortstop. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Coppin State pitcher Jamie Imhof then walked Lauren Pollock (Severna Park, Md.). With an 0-2 count, Cyphert got a good look at a pitch and sent it well over the left centerfield fence. The home run ties Cyphert's career-high of five home runs from last season. She has also gone deep in four consecutive non-conference games.

Maryland scored again in the sixth. Cyphert led off with a walk. A batter later, shortstop Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) doubled in Cyphert.

Imhof (6-6) allowed only two hits and fanned ten Maryland batters in the complete game loss.

The Terps mercied the second game 12-0 in the fifth inning. Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) pitched a complete game victory for Maryland. Aditays (6-5) allowed only two hits and struck out five to finish off the doubleheader sweep.

The Maryland offense was led by sophomore left fielder Nneka Cardoza (Brockton, Mass.). Cardoza tied several career-highs in the game, including hits (3), RBI (3), and runs scored (3). She also hit her first home run of the season, an inside-the-park shot to right field. The battery of Aditays and freshman catcher Rachel Greyson (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) got their first two hits of the season. Greyson went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in her collegiate debut.

The 12-0 victory is Maryland's greatest run differential of the season. The last time the Terps faced off against Coppin State was Apr. 23, 1996. Maryland swept the doubleheader by the scores of 37-0 and 14-0.

The Terps will grace the diamond again Wednesday, Apr. 16 as they host the James Madison Dukes (17-20, 4-2 CAA) at 5:00 p.m. Admission and parking to the game are free.
