College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (12-22, 0-11 ACC) and Towson Tigers (18-14, 5-3 CAA) played a nine-inning game, but it might has well have been just one.
Towson handed Maryland a 7-4 loss Tuesday night, with all 11 runs coming in the sixth inning.
The game up until that point was a bona-fide pitcher's duel, with senior Jared Stuart (2-3) and junior Jason Seger (2-1) matching each other pitch-for-pitch.
Things changed in the sixth inning. Towson started off the top of the inning with a bang, with Shane Justis singling and Mike Costello reaching on an error. After an Adam Heffron sacrifice fly, Stuart hit Casper Wells with a pitch and was removed from the game.
Reliever Josh Andrews (Monrovia, Md.) was unable to retire a batter, allowing three straight hits before giving way to one of the hottest Terrapin pitchers, senior Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.).
Basinger's luck ran out, allowing an RBI groundout and then a two-run home run to Bobby Paduano to put the Tigers up 7-0.
But the Terps answered right back in the bottom half of the inning, with senior Daryl Whitmer (Waldorf, Md.) driving in senior Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) and sophomore Joe Sargent (Chesapeake Beach, Md.) on an RBI-double down the left field line.
Freshman Mike Costantino (Somerset, Mass.) continued to come through for the Terps, doubling in Whitmer in the very next at bat. Costantino would later score on a sacrifice fly by senior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.).
The game would conclude the way it began, with both teams scattering hits but ultimately coming up empty.
Maryland caught Towson at a bad time - the win was their fourth straight, coming off of a 19-10 victory over No. 17 Richmond.
Costantino was 2-for-4 in the game, his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season, which also included his 12th double of the year.
Maryland will take on Clemson this weekend for a three-game ACC series at Shipley Field. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m., with Saturday and Sunday games beginning at 1 p.m. Friday is faculty/staff appreciation night, with all University of Maryland, College Park faculty and staff entitled to four free tickets. Tickets can be picked up at the Terrapin Ticket Office located in the Comcast Center from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by showing their UMCP ID.
In addition, former Terp and ACC Triple Crown winner Derek Hacopian will be on hand Friday to toss out the first pitch.
