Terps Drop Two In ACC Play

April 19, 2003

Game 1 | Game 2

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Md. - The Terps (15-15, 0-6 ACC) came up empty handed in their search for an ACC win this season. Maryland dropped a doubleheader to Virginia (31-20, 3-3 ACC) Saturday, losing game one 3-0 and game two 5-1.

The Cavaliers struck first in game one in the bottom of the second. Maryland starter Monica Cyphert (Warren, Ohio) allowed back-to-back hits to left field by Sara Larquier and Jenn Wynn. The Terps secured two outs on a ground out and pop up, but the defense folded on what would have been an inning-ending fly ball to left. Virginia scored two runs on the error by Nneka Cardoza (Brockton, Mass.) to stake a 2-0 lead.

Maryland had an opportunity to score in the fifth when Cyphert led off with a double to left field. Freshman Natalie Grossman (Skillman, N.J.) entered the game to pinch run for Cyphert, but was left stranded as Virginia starter Christina Grimm struck out the side. Virginia added another run off a pair of doubles in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead 3-0.

Cyphert (9-8) struck out three in the loss. Grimm (12-5) fanned four Terps and held Maryland to three hits in the victory.

In the third inning of game two, Cardoza took first base after being hit by a pitch. A batter later, Cyphert walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Jillian Callaway (Brandywine, Md.) hit a ground ball that was misplayed by second baseman Sara Laquier, which allowed Cardoza to speed home to put the Terps on top, 1-0.

The Terps had another opportunity to put some runs on the board in the fourth. Second baseman Jen Peel (St. Leonard, Md.) reached on a leadoff walk and stole second. With one out, Virginia starter Erin Horn walked both Samantha Sweeney (Marlton, N.J.) and Cardoza to load the bases. The pitcher worked out of trouble, forcing Malissa Moczulski (Burlington, N.J.) to pop up and Cyphert to strike out.

The Cavaliers battled back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a run on a one-out double to right center and a second run on a single to center to put them in the lead, 2-1. Virginia added three insurance runs in the sixth off an RBI double by Heather Field and a two-RBI triple by third baseman Ruby Rojas.

Maryland pitcher Jessica Aditays (Shrewsbury, Mass.) allowed five hits and struck out one in the loss. Her record drops to 6-6 on the season.

The Terps will next take the field at home in a doubleheader against Morgan State this Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. The Terps lead the series, 10-1.
