College Park, Md. - The bats of the No. 15 Clemson Tigers (27-12, 5-7 ACC) woke up today, handing the Maryland Terrapins (14-23, 2-12 ACC) a 20-5 defeat on Easter Sunday at Shipley Field.
The Terps put up 13 hits but without the desired results, leaving the bases loaded twice and stranding 11 runners on base.
Regardless, with a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader, Maryland claimed its second weekend series of the year and second of the last three after sweeping New York Tech earlier in the month. Maryland had not beaten Clemson since 1997 prior to this weekend, and the two ACC wins were their first two of the season.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jarosinski (Olney, Md.) capped an incredible weekend, clubbing his first career home run in the second inning and going 9-for-13 with five runs batted in over the three games.
After singling in the first, senior Ray Gemmill (Silver Spring, Md.) was looking to add to his hot weekend as well, but was struck in the head on a Stephen Jackson pitch and had to leave the game. Gemmill went 7-for-10 with a home run and two runs batted in for the weekend.
In addition, senior shortstop Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) went 6-for-9 with an RBI.
Clemson used an eight-run second inning to put Sunday's game out of reach early. Senior Kyle Frank, who came into the game three home runs, hit two in the second inning alone en route to going 5-for-5 with four runs batted in.
Brad McCann hit two home runs as well, including a mammoth shot in the top of the ninth as Clemson piled on in hopes of saving face from Saturday's losses.
Maryland used six pitchers, albeit with the same results. Clemson scored six runs off of starter Sean Kane (1-6), five off of senior Derek Hoffman (Hagerstown, Md.) and five off of sophomore Josh Andrews (Monrovia, Md.).
Fourteen of Clemson's 20 runs were scored with two outs.
Maryland will travel to West Virginia on Tuesday for their second and final game of the season against the Mountaineers.
