College Park, Md. - The Maryland Terrapin (14-25, 2-12 ACC) pitching staff struck out a season high 17 batters Wednesday night, despite falling 10-5 to the James Madison Dukes (22-18, 7-4 CAA).
Terrapin starter Jared Stuart (Corning, N.Y.) struck out a season high eight batters in the first four innings. Sophomore Josh Andrews (Monrovia, MD) contributed four strikeouts to the effort, and senior Matt Basinger (Connellsville, Pa.) and sophomore Brooks Norris (Baltimore, Md.) added two strikeouts apiece. They surpassed the season high of 16 strikeouts when Basinger struck out the Dukes' final batter.
Stuart left the game early in the fifth inning with pain in his shoulder, giving way to sophomore reliever Chris Bowen (Glenwood, Md.). Bowen took the loss after allowing three hits and a walk and chipping in a strikeout.
After allowing a run to score in the first, the Terrapin offense had a promising second inning with solo home runs by Justin Maxwell (Olney, MD) and Will Frazier (Mitchellville, Md.). The James Madison reclaimed the lead in the third after scoring two runs on two hits, but the Terps answered with a two run fourth inning to surge ahead, 4-3.
The Dukes exploded in the fifth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and one Terrapin error. The fifth inning saw the game's fifth and final lead change, as the JMU batting spree proved insurmountable to the Terrapins.
Despite their pitching troubles, Maryland had several offensive highlights. Both Maxwell and Frazier hit their second homeruns in two games. Maxwell's shot was his team-leading ninth of the year, and the centerfielder finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Redshirt freshman Brian Jarosinski (Olney, Md.) went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to eight games, tying Frazier's team-high streak from earlier in the season.
Doing most of the damage for James Madison was the hitting duo of Brent Metheny and Eddie Kim, who had five of the Dukes' 11 hits and four runs batted in. With a double and a single, Metheny became JMU's all-time total base leader with 445, passing Greg Miller (1998-2001).
Three JMU batters struck out three times, while slugger Kim added another two whiffs. Stuart was charged with five earned runs but was consistently around the strike zone.
The lead-changes made for an exciting game, with James Madison scoring in the top of each of the odd-numbered innings and Maryland responding in the bottom of each of the even-numbered innings until the bottom of the eighth when the Terps were unable to score.
Maryland travels to Durham, N.C. this weekend for a three-game series with the Duke Blue Devils. Saturday's game will be televised on Fox Sports Net South, with a start time of 5 p.m. Senior ace Steve Schmoll (Rockville, Md.) is slated to start that game, with the rest of the weekend rotation forthcoming.
